The equivocal outcome at Copenhagen has not stalled the growth of climate change consulting nor the broader climate change industry. The state of the economy has taken a toll, however, slicing percentage points off growth figures as projects have been delayed and budgets adjusted, postponing some more forward-looking projects, most notably at the state and municipal level. But the outlook is positive. Dozens of company leaders told us in interviews-and scores more in surveys-that the climate change consulting business not only grew in 2009 but that growth from 2010 through 2013 will be robust, driven by market and policy factors that...
Double-Digit Growth Indicates ERM's Climate Change Services May Be Recession-Resistant
Sustainability and climate change revenues reach 5-10% of firm's total.
In response to emerging client needs, Environmental Resources Management (ERM) made a concerted push three years ago to expand beyond greenhouse gas (GHG) measuring and accounting into energy efficiency and other core climate change mitigation practices. "We realized that we had to have a follow-on to our footprinting work because you don't move the footprint by adding it up, you only move it with energy efficiency professionals," said John Curtis, global climate change practice leader. "We've built a global core team that has grown to about 30 people." To say the decision was a wise one would be an understatement. Since ERM formed its climate change and sustainability division, revenues from that practice grew from less than 0.5% of ERM revenue to just under 10%...
Fluor Like Its Projects Big and Complex
Largest offshore windfarm, largest PV wafer plant, clean coal, nuclear, solar, biomass and geothermal power round out EPC firm's climate change services
Fluor specializes in large and complex projects, seeking and executing contracts that complement its size, financial strength and resources, from feasibility and front engineering and design studies, but it specializes in engineering, procurement and construction contracts. Unlike many of its engineering-construction peers, Fluor doesn't play in the corporate greenhouse gas strategy and consulting game...
Worley Parsons EcoNomics Tool Embeds Sustainabilility Into Core Business and Project Management Practices
Australian firm is active in gas, solar-hybrid systems, CSTP, gasification and nuclear.
The oil, gas and petrochemicals industries are in the crosshairs of the worldwide drive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For companies in these industries, investment decisions are fraught with extraordinary risk, especially outside Europe, the only region in the world where greenhouse gas policies have been mapped out with some certainty, at least for the next 10 years or so. Many of the environmental consulting and engineering companies interviewed for this edition serve these industries to some extent, but few are as deeply involved as WorleyParsons. To sharpen its strategy consulting for hydrocarbons clients, as well as those in electric power, mining and heavy industries, WorleyParsons launched its EcoNomics capability in 2008.
